A French excavation mission working with a local Iraqi team recently discovered the palace of King Sin-Iddinam of the early Amorite city-state of Larsa at the archaeological site of Larsa, in Iraq’s Dhi Qar governorate.
The discovery was announced by the Iraqi ministry of culture, tourism and antiquities, on Thursday.
According to a statement published by the ministry, the discovered palace dating back to the third millennium BC contains 10 rooms and other administrative annexes.
“The missions are still ongoing and will return in the second season. One of the future excavation goals is to complete the excavation of this palace. The outer wall of the palace is made of grilled bricks, and the interior rooms are made of mud,” said Mustafa Fadel, head of monitoring of the antiquities team.
King Sin-Iddinam ruled the ancient near east city-state of Larsa from 1785 BC to 1778 BC.
Larsa, or as locals call it, Tulul al-Sinkara, was an important city-state of ancient Sumer, the earliest known civilization in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia.
