Iraq: Borrell discusses terrorism, elections in visit to Baghdad

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stressed the importance of the EU’s commitment to cooperate under the international coalition in order to combat the threat of terrorism in Iraq, speaking during a joint press conference with Iraqi FM Foad Hussein in Baghdad on Monday.

“The EU remains strongly committed to the global coalition, there is no place for terrorism or rogue elements, including ISIS, in a sovereign country. There are also acts of violence and harassment against political activists, journalists, and human rights defenders. All these critical aspects of the security situation have to be addressed,” he said.

For his part, FM Hussein said that the war against ISIS proved that security in Iraq is connected to European and international security.

Regarding upcoming parliamentary elections, Borrell pointed out that the EU would deploy a mission in order to monitor elections to develop the electoral system in the country afterwards

The two diplomats also discussed the illegal immigration to the EU countries, as Hussein revealed that contracts are being made with Lithuanian and Latvian Foreign Ministers regarding the flow of migrants through the Belarusian borders.

It is widely known that there are some networks and bodies that work in human smuggling, and those networks are very active in Iraq; they try to tempt Iraqi citizens to immigrate to the west in exchange for huge amounts of money. During the past few weeks, we witnessed what happened along the Lithuanian borders and Latvia, and we had constant contact with the Lithuanian and Latvian Foreign Ministers.”

SOT, Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy: “For the first time, European Union will deploy European Union Election observation mission, based on an objective assessment of the polls, this mission will produce a public report, with a recommendation which will try to help to further improve the electoral framework in Iraq.”

SOT, Foad Hussein, Iraqi FM (Arabic): “The Europeans have actively participated in the war against ISIS, which posed a threat for us as well as for European security. Therefore, the security in Europe and the region and the security in Iraq are intertwined.”
