IDPs camps in the Duhok governorate witnessed a heavy turnout at the polling stations on Friday, as the ‘special voting’ for security forces and displaced people kicked off two days before the Iraqi snap parliamentary elections.

Large numbers of voters in the Sharya camp could be seen standing in queues in front of the polling station.

The ‘special voting’ allows one and a half million soldiers, displaced people and prison inmates sentenced to less than five years to cast their votes to help elect the new parliament as the rest of the country goes to polls on Sunday.

Sharya camp in Iraqi Kurdistan hosts large numbers of displaced people, the majority of whom are Yazidis, who fled to the region due to ISIS crimes during their control on parts of Iraq and Syria back in 2014.
