Iraqis head to polling stations in Baghdad on Sunday to vote in the early parliamentary elections.

Footage from a polling station inside the Al-Rasheed Hotel in Baghdad showed a number of voters casting their votes.

The current elections are the first in Iraq since the outbreak of major protests in the country in 2019, which at that time toppled the government of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi.

Early elections are being organized this year after they were planned to be held in 2022, and they will be held under a new electoral law demanded by protesters during the ‘Tishreen protests’ in 2019.

According to the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights, at least 600 demonstrators were killed and dozens were kidnapped during the outbreak of the ‘Tishreen protests.’

According to Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission, about 24 million Iraqis are eligible to cast their ballots for 3,449 candidates who are set to compete for 329 seats in the country’s Parliament.
