Israel: Bennett reassures Iran 'will never have nuclear weapons' in first meeting with Merkel

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett clearly stated Israel’s position in preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons during a meeting with his Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Jerusalem on Sunday.

“Israel’s responsibility is to make sure, by deeds and not speeches, that Iran will never have nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons in the hands of such an extremist and violent regime will adversely change the face of the region and the world,” said Bennett.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid took time in the meeting to acknowledge the German chancellor’s efforts in promoting Holocaust remembrance during her tenure.

“There was not a single moment, in all your long tenure, that you tried to evade the Holocaust memorial. Instead, you made an entire nation, an entire nation, look at history with almost cruel sincerity,” Lapid stated.

This is Angela Merkel’s final trip to Israel as Chancellor of Germany before the end of her nearly 16 years in office.
