Israel’s Prime Minister at a press conference on Sunday said that he ordered security forces to be on alert to prevent further attacks after a Palestinian man killed one Israeli and injured at least three others in Jerusalem’s Old City earlier on Sunday.
“This is the second recent terrorist attack in Jerusalem. I have directed the security forces to prepare accordingly and be alert, also over concern for copycat attacks. We need to be on heightened alert and prevent future attacks,” Bennett said.
The PM also welcomed UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s move to classify the political wing of Hamas as a ‘as a terrorist organisation.’
“Until now only the military arm has been defined as such. Now, members of the political wing will be exposed to the same exact sanctions. This reflects a welcome understanding, that I hope will spread to all of Europe, about how terrorist organisations work. There are no rockets and no terrorism without a political wrapper, without fundraising, without an incitement machine,” said Bennett.
The assailant of Sunday’s attack was shot dead by Israeli police after he injured two police officers.
In a statement, Hamas confirmed the attacker, presented as Fadu Abu Shukhaydam, was a member of their organisation though they did not directly claim responsibility for the attack.

SOT, Naftali Bennett, Prime Minister of Israel (Hebrew): “Our forces on the scene acted very quickly. Two policewomen and one policeman that were at the scene quickly neutralised the terrorist. Nevertheless, this is the second recent terrorist attack in Jerusalem. I have directed the security forces to prepare accordingly and be alert, also over concern for copycat attacks. We need to be on heightened alert and prevent future attacks.”
SOT, Naftali Bennett, Prime Minister of Israel (Hebrew): “It is possible to draw support this morning from the decision of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to define Hamas, even what is termed the political wing, as a terrorist organisation. Until now only the military arm has been defined as such. Now, members of the political wing will be exposed to the same exact sanctions. This reflects a welcome understanding, that I hope will spread to all of Europe, about how terrorist organisations work. There are no rockets and no terrorism without a political wrapper, without fundraising, without an incitement machine.”
