"It is always unfortunate" - IOC spox as Nigerian sprinter suspended from Tokyo 2020 for dopingУ вашего броузера проблема в совместимости с HTML5

The potential doping case of the Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare in the Olympics was ‘unfortunate,’ IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said at the Main Press Centre in Tokyo on Saturday.

Okagbare, who was expected to compete in the semi-finals of the women’s 100m run, received a provisional suspension notification after testing positive for human growth hormone during a pre-competition probe taken on July 19. She would miss the remainder of the 2020 Olympics.

Answering the question on the level of the IOC’s certainty that only clean athletes are competing after a pandemic year in the Tokyo Games, Mark Adams stressed that the ITA [International Testing Agency] and WADA were doing “a good job.” He shared that it was not possible to catch every single cheating athlete, noting that in Tokyo it was the first time when competition testing samples had been collected and would be stored for 10 years, so that anti-doping authorities could re-analyse them in future.

The Tokyo 2020 organising committee and the IOC have also announced at the daily press conference the living conditions for the isolated athletes and staff who tested positive with COVID-19.

“We fully sympathise with everyone you have to go through this, it is a difficult time with the athletes in particular,” said IOC spokesperson Mark Adams.

Adams added that there was nothing much to do about that as there were “certain regulations” imposed by the Japanese Health authorities to deal with COVID cases during the Games. However the IOC official mentioned, that according to some National Olympic Committees, he had contacted on this matter, the situation had improved with food and necessary equipment deliveries as well as psychological consultations.

On his part, the spokesperson of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee Masa Takaya also underlined that the situation had improved, noting that organisers of the Games were “trying to implement a more flexible approach to accommodate the positive cases and concerned personnel.”
