Italy: Airlift plane from Afghanistan lands in Rome

An army airplane of the Italian armed forces carrying Afghan citizens arrived at Fiumicino airport of Rome, on Wednesday.

SOT, Colonel Diego Giarrizzo, Director of the Joint Operation Centre of the Joint Force Operations Command (Italian): “We are here awaiting the arrival of the second airplane carrying 85 Afghan citizens to Italy. As you must be aware, the deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan, particularly in Kabul has brought the Minister of Defense to ask with urgency to the Chief of Staff, General Veciarelli, the evacuation of the staff of the Italian embassy, i.e. the diplomatic personnel, as well as of all Italian nationals. Simultaneously, the Joint Force Operations command is implementing an acceleration in the operations of transfer, what we now could call a humanitarian air bridge, of the Afghan citizens who collaborated with Italy, and I even feel like saying, of all those who now are in the situation of need.”

SOT, Colonel Diego Giarrizzo, Director of the Joint Operation Centre of the Joint Force Operations Command (Italian): “Today we are planning the arrival of 85 Afghan citizens. In the days to come the commitment of the [Italian] Defense [Ministry] and of all armed forces is with the highest priority to carry as many Afghan citizens as possible to Italy. [Local] collaborators and people in need, for sure. We are doing everything possible, much depends on the security conditions at the [Kabul] Airport. Nevertheless, I can assure you that the commitment is maximum. The Italian army is putting at disposal its utmost resources to execute quickly and safely this operation.”

SOT, Colonel Diego Giarrizzo, Director of the Joint Operation Centre of the Joint Force Operations Command (Italian): “The estimated number is increasing, because it has been identified, that the populations that find themselves in need are growing, as can be seen in all TV stations worldwide.”
