At least 280 migrants were rescued and seven dead were recovered in a special operation held approximately 24 miles off the Lampedusa southern coast on Tuesday.

All of the victims died of hypothermia, Prosecutor of Southern Sicily’s Agrigento Luigi Patronaggio told the press.

Most of the migrants found in a precarious wooden boat were originally from Bangladesh and Egypt.
