The Lazio region in central Italy has started administering a third COVID-19 vaccine shot to patients who have undergone an organ transplant, as seen in the Umberto I Hospital in Rome on Thursday.
Forty organ transplant patients received the first batch of the booster shots in the hospital.
“These patients are at greater risk of becoming infected with COVID and once caught they even risk dying precisely because they do not have a fully functioning immune system”, said Massimo Cardillo, director of the Italian national transplant centre.
Almost 85 percent of the Lazio population above 12 years of age have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine.

SOT, Massimo Cardillo, Director of the National Transplant Center (Italian): “The transplant patient is an immunocompromised patient because he has to undergo a therapy called immonosuppressive therapy for life, that is, he takes drugs that depress the immune system. For this reason, these patients are at greater risk of becoming infected with Covid and once caught they even risk dying precisely because they do not have a fully functioning immune system. In these patients the vaccine is perhaps even more important than in the normal population.”
SOT, Patient (Italian): ” No no, I’m not afraid because you have to get vaccinated to protect yourself from Covid because it’s a very serious disease and I took the first dose the second dose went very well I didn’t have any problems and I gladly do the third dose. In fact, I made it look no problem.”
SOT, Patient (Italian): “I’m fine, first dose went very well, second dose very well. I’m fine.”
SOT, Patient (Italian): “I have a rare disease. I was liver transplanted so after transplants they contacted me to do the third dose and here I am, I did it, like the previous ones.”
