Italy: ECB chief Lagarde's visit to Turin met with protesters

Dozens of people gathered in downtown Turin on Monday to decry the visit of the President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde.
ECB boss arrived at the North Italian city to hold a lecture at the local Carignano theatre, sparking discontent of left-wing demonstrators.
“Mario Draghi and Christine Lagarde are two ugly faces of the same medal”, said a protester who lamented that Europe is governed by ‘technocratic elements’ rather than ‘people who were approved by the population’.
Another activist went on to say that the lower classes are ‘completely excluded from the politics and economic choices’ in both the Italian and the European governments.
The demonstration was supported by local students, protesting Lagarde and Draghi’s ‘policies that we the youth pay for as a generation’, a protester commented.

SOT, Protester (Italian): “Today Europe is not ruled by the people who were approved by the population but it is ruled by the technocratic elements. It is not surprising that Cristine Lagarde succeeds from Mario Draghi at the rule of the European Central Bank which strengthens even more our words that Mario Draghi and Christine Lagarde are two ugly faces of the same medal.”

SOT, Protester (Italian): “With this gathering we are saying that it is needed to build a large social opposition to the big representatives of strong power so the institutions would be ruled by those who represent lower classes, which are now completely excluded from the politics and economic choices of the national and European government.”

SOT, Protester (Italian): “We are also here as students because we want to oppose ourselves to the policies held by our universities for example an agreement with Frontex, gendarmes of the European Union, the Turin Polytechnic University is discussing and signing an agreement of four million euro, for a research project for the Frontex. This is intolerable. We do not accept that the European gendarmes would be inside our campuses and that Lagarde, another face of Draghi’s government, would be today in Turin because we know that they are responsible for the policies that we the youth pay for as a generation.
