A fire on the Ponte dell’Industria led to a partial collapse of the bridge in Rome, on Saturday.

The fire caused one of the steel side walkways intended for pedestrians to collapse, leading to the bridge ultimately being closed to traffic as firefighters attempted to put out the blaze.

No one was injured during the incident but nearby residents were left without gas and electricity during the night.

The 131-metre (431 feet) long, 7-metre (23 feet) wide bridge which was opened in 1863 connects the Ostiense and Portuense neighbourhoods of Rome crossing over the Tiber river.
