Italy: G20 culture ministers meet in Rome for first time in G20 history

The first G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting was held inside the arena of the Colosseum in Rome on Thursday, under the Italian G20 presidency.

Italian premier Mario Draghi attended the meeting alongside culture minister Dario Franceschini and Audrey Azoulay, the director-general of UNESCO.

“We meet at a crucial moment: the pandemic has made it even more evident how interdependent we are, how necessary it is for countries to work together because global problems require global responses,” said Franceschini, adding that, “Empty squares, closed museums, cinemas, theatres, libraries, have made our cities sad, dull. For this reason, we now know that culture will be the key to restart, the engine of innovative, sustainable and balanced growth.”

The G20 Culture Ministers’ is a two-day event that centres around digital transition in the sector, the establishment of common standards in training culture workers, climate change and its impact on the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the member states.
