Italy: Messina becomes first European city to offer needle-free COVID-19 vaccines

On Wednesday, Messina became the first European city to offer needle free COVID-19 vaccines to its residents at the city fair.

“I didn’t feel anything, just a bit of pressure but nothing else,” responded Anna Aveni, the first European to receive the jab needle-free when asked if she felt anything,.

The device uses a nozzle, a syringe without a needle capable of injecting the vaccine into the arm through an air pressure system.

“This is a mechanical device which works thanks to a spring inside which pushes the plunger of our needle free syringe, which is the nozzle. The process is based on speed, a liquid from inside the device is pushed out at high speed and becomes sharp. This is a well-known technology known as the water jet technology, which is today used for the most precise cuts, for example diamonds or marbles,” explained Gamastech manager Arturo Maravigna.

The nozzle is able to inject the vaccine into the arm through a 0.15mm micro-hole which projects the liquid into the human body in less than 100 milliseconds.

“This has huge benefits both for patients and health workers, as confirmed by the American CDC,” Arturo Maravigna went on to say. Maravigna’s Gamastech company are supplying the hardware for the process.

According to various scientific studies, an estimated 10 per cent of the world population suffers from belenophobia, a fear of sharp objects including needles.

It was born in 1950, but it did not have a huge success, because in those years, it wasn’t possible to get single-use parts. Now, we managed to get single-use parts such as the nozzle. This has huge benefits both for patients and health workers, as confirmed by the American CDC.”

SOT, Alberto Firenze, Commissioner for Messina’s emergency COVID response (Italian): “It is an opportunity that we wanted to have through technology and we wanted to implement it in Messina to encourage vaccination. We are trying this out all because we have a bet we want to win: By August 31, we want this province to achieve a high level of vaccination. We all hope to lead calmer lives this autumn rather than still being told that there are people who are hospitalised daily or, alas, that people are still dying on a daily basis because of the coronavirus.”
