Violent clashes broke out between police and students protesting over the death of 18-year-old Lorenzo Parelli in Milan on Friday.

Clashes broke out when police blocked students’ access to Confindustria Lombardia, a labour union in Milan. Students carried a polystyrene beam to symbolise how Parelli had died on his last day of school-worker internship at a metalworking factory in Udine after being hit by a steel beam in the head.

Critics have come to blame an Italian school law that mandates not only students of technical and professional institutes, but also high schools to accumulate 200 hours (400 for technical and professional institutes) of school-work alternation) during the final three years (from the third to the fifth year of high school).
