Flights were diverted away from Catania airport after Mount Etna spewed a kilometre (0.62 miles) ash column into the sky on Tuesday.

Dense clouds and smoke appeared to be billowing from the south-east crater of the 3,357-metre (11,000 foot) Mount Etna.

The increased volcanic activity of Mount Etna and the resulting ash fall have already led to flight delays at the Catania-Fontanarossa Airport since October 23.
