ith an ear-splitting noise, the mechanical digger scraped another pile of black, volcanic ash off the Sicilian street and dumped it in the back of an open truck.

“I don’t remember it ever coming down as intensely as this, and it’s getting more frequent,” yelled Alfio Previtera, a local council official, as he sidestepped the huge dust cloud kicked up by the digger.
The brooms have been out this week in the small Sicilian town of Giarre, squeezed between the Mediterranean and Mount Etna. The volcano has erupted 12 times in 25 days, producing spectacular lava fountains and covering local towns in tonnes of gravel-like debris.
