Mount Etna's Spectacular Eruption Leaves Surrounding Villages Covered in Ash

Mount Etna in Sicily, one of the most active volcanoes in Europe, awed locals with a spectacular eruption on Tuesday evening.

Incredible footage shows a tall column of smoke rising over 3,000ft from the crater, while a blanket of black ash landed on nearby towns and prompted the closure of Catania airport.

According to Italian officials, the volcanic activity was largely expected, so precautions were taken and no injuries or damage have been reported.

By the early hours of Wednesday, the activity started to slow down.
