Clashes broke out on the streets of Trieste on Saturday as thousands of people took joined in a protest against Italy’s COVID Green Pass mandate for workers.

The Green Pass is a certificate proving the person has been vaccinated, tested negative or recovered from COVID-19. The pass became obligatory for all workers in Italian society from 15 October. The decision sparked multiple demonstrations around the country.

The local police headquarters reported that 8,000 people showed up to demonstrate in Saturday’s rally night.

Clashes eventually broke out between protesters and police near the central Piazza Unita. The area had been cordoned off following a recent order banning protests there and police had attempted to move people away from the area before the clashes.

Workers in Italy who do not yet have the Green Pass are not permitted to enter their workplace without a negative COVID test. Each day they miss as a result of not having a Green Pass is regarded as an unjustified absence.

Those who go to work without the health certificate or a negative COVID test risk fines of between of up to €1,500 ($1,730).
