Italy: Sicily on red alert as Cyclone Apollo hits island

Sicily has been on red alert as Cyclone Apollo, a Mediterranean hurricane, was hitting the coastal lines in the provinces of Messina, Catania, Syracuse and Ragusa bringing strong winds and heavy rainfalls on Friday.

Civil protection units and authorities were seen guarding the historical centre in the city of Caltanissetta about 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the coast line.

“We have secured the damage which resulted from the first wave of bad weather, the new contrast to aquatic risk provides for greater attention from the southern part of the city and the historic centre,” said Michelangelo Saporito, the commander at Caltanissetta Provincial emergency unit.

Schools were closed earlier this week through the island due to the worsening weather conditions.

In recent days, search and rescue crews conducted hundreds of operations across the island, aiming to secure local areas and rescue people trapped in their homes and cars.
