Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, talked about the results achieved at the G20 summit, as the event concluded in Rome, on Sunday.
Sanchez praised the agreements reached to handle the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.
“The best thing we can do is to ensure universal and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. That is why the Spanish Government welcomes the fact that the G20 has signed up to the objective, the commitment that 70% of the population of all countries in the world will be vaccinated by mid-2022,” Sanchez said.
The prime minister added, “We confirmed the G20’s firm will to commit $100 billion a year in climate finance for developing countries, and to do so as soon as possible, and most importantly in my view, we made clear the urgency of taking immediate action, the best proof of which is that we have agreed to end public financing for new coal-fired power plants abroad by the end of 2021.”
The G20 summit took place on 30-31 November in Rome.
SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): “The G20 had three main priorities: Firstly the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and the collective preparedness and response to future health emergencies, secondly to face the climate and environmental emergency that threatens us and finally to demonstrate our determination, that of society as a whole, of all countries, of all regions of the world to emerge stronger from this crisis and to be able to build a better future.”
SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): “The best thing we can do is to guarantee universal and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. That is why the Government of Spain welcomes the fact that the G20 has signed up to the goal, the commitment that 70% of the population of all countries in the world will be vaccinated by mid-2022.”
SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): “To make a tangible contribution to this goal, the Government of Spain has announced that it will fulfill its commitment to donate 30 million vaccines by the end of the year and that we will donate a further 20 million vaccines in the first three months of 2022.”
SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): “We have agreed to increase the level of ambition of the international community on climate targets. In this sense, the conclusions are: firstly, we recognise the importance of maintaining the goal of keeping the temperature increase to just 1.5 degrees within reach, secondly, we confirmed the G20’s firm will commit $100 billion a year in climate finance for developing countries, and to do so as soon as possible, and most importantly in my view, we made clear the urgency of taking immediate action, the best proof of which is that we have agreed to end public financing for new coal-fired power plants abroad by the end of 2021”.
SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain (Spanish): “So what we are facing is a new production model, we have to transform our production model. Not only Spain’s, but also Spain’s, but that of the global economy as a whole, Europe committed in July last year.”
