A Spanish plane carrying 260 people evacuated from Kabul landed at the Torrejon de Ardoz airbase on Monday evening.

The aircraft, the eighth chartered by the Spanish government, landed at the Madrid military airfield at around 19:00 local time (17:00GMT).

According to reports, three people needed medical attention upon landing.

The evacuees were met on the runway by the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, the Minister of Social Security, Inclusion and Migration, Jose Luis Escriva, and the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias.

At a press conference afterwards, the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, confirmed that 390 more evacuees from Afghanistan are expected to arrive on Tuesday.

Robles also announced an agreement reached between the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, in which the European country could host up to 4,000 Afghan collaborators from the US for two weeks.

“The agreement that has been signed here is that if necessary up to a maximum of 4,000 Afghans and for a period of 15 days, these people brought by the United States would be received within the framework of this agreement that has been signed. As I said, it is a maximum and it would be for 15 days,” the minister said.

SOT, Margarita Robles, Spain Minister of Defence (Spanish): “It has been agreed between Sanchez and President Biden that if it is necessary, that Afghans can be received here in Spain, they will be received. A verbal agreement has been signed. People will probably also be received in bases in Germany and in bases in Italy. And the agreement that has been signed here is that if necessary, up to a maximum of 4,000 Afghans and for a period of 15 days, these people brought by the United States will be received as part of this agreement that has been signed. As I said, it is a maximum and it would be for 15 days, but in any case, we don’t know when it will take place because there are forecasts that they could first go to the bases in Germany or the Sigonella base, the important thing is that Spain and the United States have reached this agreement, that this agreement is in place and that it is the result of good relations and we will see over the days whether it is necessary for them to come to Spain or not”.
