American Olympic swimmer Lilly King spoke out on doping and voiced criticism over letting Russian athletes compete at the Tokyo 2020 Games under the name of Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team, on Sunday.
“There are a lot of people here, that should not be here,” said King during a press conference at the Main Press Center, when her team mate Ryan Murphy had been asked about reactions to his comments on doping at the Games.
The athlete, who won silver and bronze medals in Tokyo, was more direct than her partner, who once again stressed it that he had “never mentioned a specific athlete or country,” just noting he believed there was doping occurring in swimming and that there was a need to fight a it better way.
Murphy said he was disappointed by the way his initial comments had been perceived.
King joked that unlike Ryan, who according to her was affected, she had not raced “anyone from a country, who should have been banned, and instead got a slap on the wrist and a rebranding of their national flag,” making it clear she was talking about ROC swimmers.
Murphy spoke out against doping in swimming on Friday, saying he was “swimming in a race that’s probably not clean,” shortly after losing out on the gold in the 200m backstroke to Russia’s Evgeny Rylov. The young Russian later emphatically denied doping at a press conference alongside Murphy.
