International journalists were seen preparing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic opening ceremony, onto which heavy restrictions have been imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at the Media Press Centre in Tokyo.

Although journalists were able to be seated next to and across from each other as they worked from their laptops, protective screens had been placed between each seat as a protective measure.

“I always wanted to go to Tokyo and now I finally got the opportunity, and I get to see it,” said Johanna Lundberg, a photographer from Bildbyran Photo Agency. “It’s such an exciting city, so much to see and so much to eat, but you only get to see it through the bus window from the hotel to the venue so it’s sad because you don’t get the full experience.”

Luxemburger Wort photographer Christian Kemp said that European journalists are not worried about catching COVID-19 whilst in Tokyo, despite the country having declared a state of emergency due to a rise in cases, stating that ‘we are all vaccinated.’

All reporters have also been subjected to mandatory tests upon arrival, whilst visitors must carry out daily COVID-19 testing.

The games are set to begin July 23 and go until August 8 after being postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

SOT, Christian Kemp, Photographer for Luxemburger Wort: “It’s my first Olympic Games so it would be new for me, so we will cover the opening ceremony tomorrow and then we will follow the Luxemburg athletes so that will also be very exciting.”

SOT, Christian Kemp, Photographer for Luxemburger Wort: “We are not scared because for most European guys we are all vaccinated, all of us are fully vaccinated already, so we are not really that concerned to get ill, we still need to be careful but it’s not much of a big deal for us.”
