Homeless people set up encampments made of cardboard and tarpaulin underneath the Olympics banners outside Tokyo’s Metropolitan Government building, as seen on Monday.
According to local news, government officials handed out several eviction notices ahead of the Opening Ceremony for the Summer Games.
“We would like to clean up the whole area, but their stuff (tents and belongings) are in the way, so I’m sorry to say that we haven’t done cleaning much. But of course, we do pick up trash,” said Tanaka, a janitor
Parks have also been locked up and lit up at night to discourage homeless people from staying there.
SOT, Tanaka, Cleaning man (Japanese) : “We clean every day, Monday through Friday, and twice a month on Sundays. You know, dust and dirt accumulate. After all, there are a lot of dirty people, aren’t there? Cigarette butts. You see, there’s no place to put cigarette butts here. There’s no smoking area. There is no place to smoke.”
SOT, Tanaka, Cleaning man (Japanese): “I work here from 08:00 until about 16:30. I take an hour off for lunch. It’s a big place, you know. 25,000 square metres, including the first and second floors. Cleaning the exterior. The exterior of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.”
SOT, Tanaka, Cleaning man (Japanese): ” (Even though the Olympics have started), the people living on the streets continue to live as usual. They get food from somewhere and eat and drink those distribution. There is a place for garbage. Everyone puts them there. That’s what we clean every day, so the two of us work together. We come around 08:00 and collect that garbage.”
SOT, Tanaka, Cleaning man (Japanese): “That’s right. During this Olympics, of course, it’s business as usual. Even the Olympics have started, but this place, you know, stays the same.”
SOT, Tanaka, Cleaning man (Japanese): “So they’re working on a vaccine now at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, over there. So we would like to clean up the whole area, but their stuff (tents and belongings) are in the way, so I’m sorry to say that we haven’t done cleaning much. But of course we do pick up trash.”
