Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Amman, on Friday, to demand the suspension of the National Defense Law and to protest against rising prices of goods and fuel.

Protestors were seen holding signs reading “raising electricity prices is a war waged on citizens.” Slogans such as “our demands are legitimate: bread, justice and freedom” could also be heard.

“The reasons for this demonstration today is to save Jordan, this wounded country, restoring the state and the resources are the most important demands we came for today, as well as the cancellation of the oppressive, politically-explosive and dictatorial Defense law,” said Masoud al-Ajarneh, member of the Popular Movement for Change.

Jordanian authorities had announced the implementation of the National Defense Law No. 13 of 1992 as of March 17, 2020, to face the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However some claim that the authorities are using the law as a pretext to limit the freedoms of individuals and political, union, and societal entities.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Masoud Al-Ajarneh, Member of Popular Movement for Change (Arabic): “The reasons for this demonstration today is to save Jordan, this wounded country, restoring the state and the resources are the most important demands we came for today, as well as the cancellation of the oppressive, politically-explosive and dictatorial Defense law, which aims at starving the Jordanian nation. This law has emptied out pockets, and it is completely useless in this situation. We have seen that in the Western democratic countries where thousands of people died, they haven’t issued a Defense Law or declared the state of emergency like the political system in Jordan did. There is absolutely no need for this tyrannical and dictatorial law that emptied out our pockets and exhausted us. We also demand a modern election law, and elected government and a democratic state that help in building the modern Jordanian state. We want to restore the resources and power, and that power be based on nation and is the source of all powers.”
