Dozens of protesters rallied in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw, on Tuesday, in a sign of disapproval towards the treatment of migrants on Poland’s eastern border with Belarus.
A candle-lit vigil was also held in honour of the migrants who have died in recent months while attempting the crossing, with at least six such cases being linked to hypothermia and exhaustion.
“Poland, as a state whose border is also the border of the European Union, is obliged to protect its borders. Nobody is demanding to open them, but borders are not defended by condemning people to death due to cold,” stated Jacek Wisniewski, an organiser of the protest and member of the Committee for the Defense of Democracy (KOD) NGO.
“An inhumane state of emergency has been declared on the territory of our country,” added Wisniewski.
Wisniewski also called for the authorities to open up access to border areas affected by Poland’s state of emergency decree for “media, medics, lawyers, independent observers and aid NGOs.”
On September 2, a state of emergency was declared along the country’s border with Belarus, amid a surge in migrant crossings. The state of emergency was further extended on September 30, drawing criticism from human rights campaigners as autumn weather sets in.

SOT, Jacek Wisniewski, Committee for the Defense of Democracy spokesperson and protest organiser (Polish): “Today, the crossing of borders by small children, such as those shown in these photographs, we treated as an attack on the state. How weak must the state be in order to be afraid of such children?”

SOT, Jacek Wisniewski, Committee for the Defense of Democracy spokesperson and protest organiser (Polish): “Poland, as a state whose border is also the border of the European Union, is obliged to protect its borders. Nobody is demanding to open them, but borders are not defended by condemning people to death due to cold. An inhumane state of emergency has been declared on the territory of our country.”

SOT, Jacek Wisniewski, Committee for the Defense of Democracy spokesperson and protest organiser (Polish): “We demand immediate action to resolve the humanitarian crisis. We demand that media, medics, lawyers, independent observers and aid NGOs are to be granted access into the area covered under the state of emergency [decree].”
