King Felipe VI sent his traditional Christmas message to the Spanish people from the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid on Friday.
“We have made substantial progress in the fight against the pandemic thanks to the discovery and authorisation of vaccines, the large number of Spaniards who have been vaccinated and the vaccination process itself in our country, of which we can feel particularly satisfied,” said the king.
The King warned Spaniards, however, not to be complacent and said: “We must continue to be careful, to protect ourselves and to act with the greatest individual and collective responsibility. We must all do our utmost not to take steps backwards in this health crisis that has caused so much suffering; and whose victims we remember, especially at this time of year”. The King also took the opportunity to thank the health workers.
Felipe VI did not mention his father, King Juan Carlos I, or other members of his family who have been involved in corruption cases.
This is Felipe VI’s eighth Christmas message since his father abdicated the throne in his favour after a succession of scandals.

SOT, Felipe VI, King of Spain (Spanish): “Last year, in my Christmas message, I shared with you the need to make a great collective effort that would allow us to overcome covid-19, with the hope placed in science and especially in vaccines. one year later, and always with all the necessary prudence, the situation is different. We have made substantial progress in the fight against the pandemic thanks to the discovery and authorisation of vaccines, the large number of Spaniards who have been vaccinated and the vaccination process itself in our country, of which we can be particularly satisfied”.
SOT, Felipe VI, King of Spain (Spanish): “We must continue to be careful, protect ourselves and act with the greatest individual and collective responsibility. We must all do our utmost not to take steps backwards in this health crisis that has caused so much suffering; and whose victims we remember, especially at this time of year. And once again to the health workers, at this time, we give immense thanks, with all our support and encouragement”.
SOT, Felipe VI, King of Spain (Spanish): “We all want a society that is economically and socially advanced, with stable and dignified employment, and with a solid Welfare State; we want a society that continues to promote equality between men and women, that favours individual and social progress; and we aspire, of course, to be at the forefront of technology and innovation, at the forefront of the fight against climate change and fully committed to the sustainability of our planet and its environmental balance”.
SOT, Felipe VI, King of Spain (Spanish): “[Our] Society also has an essential role to play in these times of change. The circumstances, many of them far from easy, that we have had to live through, especially over the last 40 years, have forged us into a strong and responsible society; and one that shows great solidarity, as we have seen since the beginning of this pandemic”.
SOT, Felipe VI, King of Spain (Spanish): “Our future as a country goes hand in hand with the European Union; this is how the majority of Spaniards understand it. Europe was an aspiration and an objective, and today it is a great political, economic, social and cultural reality, in which we share with our European national partners the same democratic values that offer us an institutional framework of stability, security and confidence. And also of new opportunities.”
