Professional drivers went on strike in Beirut on Thursday after the Lebanese pound suffered a historic slump.
Trade union members of the road transport sector in Lebanon staged a general strike, filling the streets with hundreds of vehicles and honking their horns.
The strike was held to express disapproval over living conditions for drivers, high prices of spare parts and fuel, and the huge increase of black-market dollars.
“We, as a transport sector, represent 95 per cent of public transport in the Lebanese state, meaning we represent development, and this sector requires support,” said one driver.
The most recent currency decline occurred after the central bank upped its withdrawal rates from 3,900 pounds to the dollar to 8,000 pounds to the dollar last week.

SOT, Road transport striker (Arabic): ’’All demands are due to the rise in the price of the dollar and it has touched, the exchange rate is 300,000 against one dollar, in addition to the fact that fuel prices are rising, and we, as a transport sector, represent 95 per cent of public transport in the Lebanese state, meaning we represent development, and this sector requires support. We have reached a stage with the government and they promised us support, and the money was secured, but there is a support mechanism, and a date was set on 01.12.2021 to implement the decision, but it was not implemented.’’
