Lebanon: Protesters block road amid record currency low

Protesters blocked a number of major roads in Beirut on Monday, to protest against worsening living conditions and a historic low of the Lebanese pound against the dollar.

Protesters used burning tyres and refuse containers to block the main roadways in the Lebanese capital. Similar scenes were reported in Sidon and Tripoli.

“We came here, to demand our rights as Lebanese people, our least demands are, water, electricity, food, drink, bread. We cannot move around, even if we want to buy bread we no longer have the ability to do so. A bundle of bread costs 10,000 pounds. We are tired people,” explained protester, Youssef.

The Lebanese Pound has lost about 90 percent of it’s value in the past two years. It currently is worth about 0.00066 US Dollars.

Protesters are asking for the government to step in and address the crisis.

SOT, Noureddine, Protester (Arabic): “As we are hungry we appeal to the commander of the army, there is no way to solve the current crisis without him. There is no security for the country except with the army. All of us support the army, but we are hungry. And there is no schools, no food or drink, no petrol, no medicine, and we no longer have the ability to buy medicine. We want to die with dignity. This is our country, let them leave it (politicians), we demand the army to arrest these sanctuaries.”
