Thousands of protesters gathered in Beirut on Wednesday, one year after an explosion ripped through the city’s port killing some 200 people and wrecking parts of the city.

The blast is believed to have been caused by improperly stored 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material.

The aftermath of the explosion added further pressure on the Lebanese economy, with the country facing financial collapse, hyperinflation, electricity blackouts, and fuel and food shortages.

The situation was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
