Protesters are taking to the streets of Beirut on Wednesday, August 4, one year after an explosion ripped through the capital’s port killing some 200 people and wrecking parts of the city.
The blast has been linked to 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was stored at the port.

The after-effects of the explosion have added further pressure on the Lebanese economy, with the country facing financial collapse, hyperinflation, electricity blackouts, and fuel and food shortages, in a situation exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
