Lebanon: Protesters cut off roads in Sidon during living conditions protest

Protesters blocked several streets in Sidon on Monday while decrying the deteriorating living conditions in the country as well as Lebanon’s ever-more devaluating currency.

Footage captured dozens of protesters cutting off city roads using burning tires and garbage bins.

“We call for each and every individual has the dignity to go out to streets at once. Milk formula price is 200.000 Lebanese Pounds (€117) and we cannot buy food for our families,” one protester voiced out.

“Before considering how to win the electoral votes, organize parliamentary election campaigns or divide the quotas among each other whether, in the Bar Association, the Medical Association, the Engineering Association, Ministries and the House of Assembly, they should contemplate the situation of their dying people. Gas canister costs 300,000 Lebanese Pounds (€176) and fuel reached at 350,000 Lebanese Pounds (€176),” another protester added.

The local currency has crashed down to a new low record over the past few days, as the exchange rate was trading at 25,000 Lebanese Pounds to one US dollar on the black market.

Lebanon has been grappling with the worst economic meltdown in its history, with the currency’s dramatic drop in value prompting high inflation rates. The United Nations recently reported that 4 out of 5 Lebanese people are currently living in poverty.
