Iraq: Dozens protest election results outside electoral commission office in Basra

Dozens gathered in front of the Office of the Electoral Commission in Basra on Wednesday, to protest against the initial results of the snap parliamentary elections announced on Monday.

Some protesters claimed elections were fraudulent and demanded that the commission re-calculate the votes manually.
“The fraud was comprehensive, they excluded most of the competencies, and this is why we demand once again that the Commission wake up from its negligence and restore the right to its owners in order to restore calm to the street,” Abdul-Daem Gholam, one of the protesters said.

Mahdi Al-Kanaan, another protester added, “there are votes that have been robbed of many good people from Shatt al-Arab to al-Faw, robbed and given to corrupt people. This is our real objection to these votes.”

Basra province is considered one of the largest provinces in terms of the number of seats in the Iraqi parliament.

The High Electoral Commission in Iraq announced the closure of all polling stations across the country on Sunday evening, ending the first early elections in Iraq after 2003.
