The Association of Families of Victims of the Beirut Port Explosion held a demonstration 18 months after the tragedy at the site of the blast that ripped through the city’s port killing some 200 people and devastating the Lebanese capital, on Tuesday. Grieving families of the victims killed in the Beirut Port blast in August 2020, returned to the explosion site holding photos of their loved ones and gathered under the statue of the expatriate.

The Association of Families of Victims of the Beirut Port Explosion demanded, “the Minister of the Interior to give permission to pursue, after the reporting in such a file was limited to those who are in charge and not to the Internal Security Forces.”

Rima al-Zahid, whose brother was a port employee and died in the blast, spoke on behalf of the families during the demonstration. “So go ahead, Director General of Internal Security, and carry out the arrest warrants for everyone who was issued against him, given the magnitude of the major crime that the world has witnessed, because you no longer have any excuse,” said al-Zahid.
The Beirut port explosion of August 4, 2020, resulted in the deaths of around 200 people, injuring more than 6,000 and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless.

The deadly blasts that left Lebanon in disarray are thought to have been caused by the still unexplained ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material that was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port.

SOT, Rima Al-Zahid, Sister of a victim (Arabic): “We see one of the accused criminals threatening a martyr’s brother with justice. Which court are you talking about? And you hit the judiciary as if you live alone in a forest. Is your ingratitude not satisfied with the response requests? Did your crime not satisfy a delay in justice?”

SOT, Rima Al-Zahid, Sister of a victim (Arabic): “Your immunities are over forever. So go ahead, Director General of Internal Security, and carry out the arrest warrants for everyone who was issued against him, given the magnitude of the major crime that the world has witnessed, because you no longer have any excuses. Go ahead, Minister of the Interior, and give the permission to pursue after you exposed yourself and restricted reporting in such a file to those directly involved and not to the Internal Security Forces. What sarcasm have you made?”
