Lebanon: Large explosion hits al-Burj al-Shamali camp for Palestinian refugees

An explosion at the Burj al-Shamali Palestinian refugee camp caused firefighters and ambulances to rush to action in the Lebanese city of Tyre on Friday night.

Security sources have so far not clarified the cause of the explosion. Local reports suggest that a weapons and ammunition depot controlled by militant Palestinian group Hamas was located at the site of the explosion.

Hamas claims that the incident was caused by the ignition of an oil tank.

Lebanese forces have sealed off the area of the incident where the remains of the explosion can be seen.

According to data compiled by UNICEF, the number of Palestine refugees in Lebanon is currently approximately 190,000.
