Libya: LNA spokesperson welcomes assignment of Fathi Bashagha as new government head

Spokesperson for Libyan National Army (LNA) under Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari, welcomed the Parliament’s decision to assign Fathi Bashagha to head the next government, in a statement delivered on Thursday from Benghazi.

“The General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces welcomes and supports the decision of the Libyan Parliament issued today, Thursday, February 10, 2022, assigning Mr Fathi Bashagha to form a new government,” Al-Mismari said.

He added that the coming government “will lead the country towards a better future” by “working with the regular military and security authorities to impose the prestige of the state and preserve its capabilities, and to protect sovereign institutions from the blackmail and domination of outlaws.”

The spokesperson noted that the General Command “supports the efforts of the Military Committee 5 + 5, paves the way for elections, seeks to establish the rules of security and safety, and supports the war on terrorism and the unification of state institutions.”

Earlier Thursday, the Libyan Parliament voted unanimously to assign Fathi Bashagha to head the next government.

The general elections in Libya were scheduled for December 24 last year but were postponed as the Libyan Parliament declared that it was impossible to hold them on time.
