The 65th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference kicks off in Vienna, on Monday, September 20.

The IAEA General Conference, which takes place every year, is an opportunity for IAEA Member States to discuss and approve the IAEA’s budget and to decide on other issues raised by the Board of Governors, the Director General, and Member States.

During this year’s edition, the leaders are set to discuss, among other issues, the deal reached earlier this month between the IAEA and Iran, solving an issue pertaining to the maintenance of monitoring equipment.

In a joint statement released by the IAEA and the Atomic Energy Organisation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (AEOI) both parties agreed to engage in high level discussions with the intention of reaching a permanent solution.

“The Vice-President and the Head of AEOI will meet the IAEA Director General at the sidelines of the upcoming General Conference, and the IAEA Director General will also visit Tehran in the near future to hold high level consultations with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran with the aim of enhancing cooperation between Iran and the IAEA in different fields and discussing current issues of mutual interest,” the statement outlined.
