Ruptly is live from the north of Athens, on Friday, August 6, as forest fires sweep through the area amid high temperatures.

The fires caused dozens of villages to be evacuated and covered the capital Athens in smoke.

The EU Commissioner for the environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius said in a tweet on Thursday that Europe was facing the “worst wildfires we’ve seen in decades” this summer, with multiple countries battling fires in the southeast of the continent amid a heatwave.
