Ruptly is live from Khartoum on Tuesday, October 26, one day after Sudan’s military seized power from a transitional government and declared a state of emergency.
On Monday, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was arrested and taken to an undisclosed location for refusing to issue a statement in support of the takeover. Protests have also erupted in several cities, and three people were killed, and more than 80 were injured during clashes with the armed forces.
One month ago, on September 24, alleged plotters had tried to take over a state media building, but the government took measures to contain the situation.

In April 2019, President Omar al-Bashir, the country’s long-term ruler, was removed from office and placed under house arrest by the Sudanese military after almost four months of street demonstrations calling for his resignation. An interim government comprising military and civilian elements then took power.​
