LIVE: Germany's new parliament discusses Infection Protection Act amid COVID-19 resurgence

The newly elected German Parliament is discussing the Infection Protection Act at the Bundestag on Thursday, November 11 in Berlin.

The discussion comes two weeks ahead of the expiration of the “pandemic state of emergency” and as the number of COVID-19 cases is surging again in Germany, as in most of Europe.

Recently, the country’s seven-day incidence rate has risen to over 200 for the first time since the pandemic started according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The worst-hit regions have been the eastern states of Saxony and Thuringia, followed by Bavaria.

With the “pandemic state of emergency” set to expire on November 25, if parliament does not extend it, the Social Democrats (SPD) and their likely coalition partners from the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) are in talks to enshrine measures such us mandatory daily testing for employees and visitors of care facilities into law.
