On Saturday, January 8, NASA will conclude the James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST) major spacecraft deployments, including its primary mirror.

This marks the end of the deployment of the most powerful telescope ever sent to space. After completing the unprecedented process of unfolding in space, JWST will start operating fully.

James Webb was launched into space on December 25 and has spent its time so far executing a complicated sequence of deployments to unfold the telescope to its final configuration.

JWST is a global project developed in cooperation between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency. It is the world’s biggest and most powerful telescope, having taken around 20 years and 10 billion dollars to develop.

Scientists are hopeful that the JWST will help shed light on many questions about the early days of the universe, and aid in the exploration of planets outside our solar system.
