NASA unfolded the second of James Webb telescope’s two primary mirror wings, the final step in its deployment, on Saturday.

The mission operation control (known as MOC) in Baltimore celebrated after the most powerful telescope ever sent to space completed its 14-day unfolding process - which could be seen in an animation based on real-time telemetry.

James Webb was launched into space on December 25 and has spent its time so far executing a complicated sequence of deployments to unfold the telescope to its final configuration.

JWST is a global project developed in cooperation between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency. It is the world’s biggest and most powerful telescope, having taken around 20 years and 10 billion dollars to develop.

Scientists are hopeful that the JWST will help shed light on many questions about the early days of the universe, and aid in the exploration of planets outside our solar system.
