The new leader of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party gives a statement in Berlin on Saturday, January 22, after being officially elected to replace Armin Laschet as party leader. The statement will close the 34th CDU party conference.

In October, Laschet said he is ready to resign as head of the CDU, almost two weeks after the party’s defeat to the Social Democrats in the federal elections with the worst ever result.

In December, Friedrich Merz was elected by Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party members as their designated new leader.However, Merz will need to be confirmed by CDU delegates during the party conference to officially become the new CDU leader.
