UK Prime minister Boris Johnson addresses the House of Commons on the government’s handling of the crisis in Afghanistan on Monday, September 6, as MPs return to Westminster after their summer break.

Following the emergency G7 virtual meeting on Afghanistan held on August 24, Johnson said the UK and other members of the Group of 7 would insist on safe passage beyond August 31, using economic, diplomatic, and political leverage on the Taliban, including withholding funds from them.

UK Foreign Minister Raab and Johnson himself have been criticized lately for not being able to help many of the translators who have previously collaborated with the British government to get out of the country. In August, Johnson had to defend Raab over him being on holiday as the Taliban advanced on Kabul.

The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan on August 15 and assumed the last remaining piece of territory in control of the US and allied forces – Kabul airport, on August 31, following the complete departure of US troops.
