Press secretary of the White House Jen Psaki and US National Security Advisor Sullivan are holding a press briefing in Washington DC on Tuesday, August 17.

The briefing takes place after Taliban forces took control over the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday, with the country’s President Ashraf Ghani reportedly fleeing to neighbouring Uzbekistan.

US President Joe Biden spoke on the matter on Monday and defended his decision to pull out US troops from Afghanistan.

“American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves,” said Biden in a televised speech.
