The World Health Assembly is holding a virtual press conference following a special session on pandemic preparedness amid the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, on Wednesday, December 1.

This event takes place as the new Omicron coronavirus variant continues to spread across the world. First identified in South Africa, the variant has now been detected in a number of countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

During the session, the member states are set to consider the development of a WHO agreement or other international instrument on pandemic preparedness and response. The discussion is set to take into account the recent report of the Working Group on Strengthening WHO Preparedness and Response to Health Emergencies.
