A koala has caused a pileup while crossing a six-lane freeway in South Australia.

The furry marsupial had wandered into the middle of heavy Monday morning traffic on Adelaide’s South Eastern Freeway, causing commuters to swerve and crash.

Stopped by a concrete road-divider, the animal had to be rescued by a motorist who had exited her car to investigate.

She put the frightened but unharmed animal in her car and brought it to the safety of an animal shelter. It was later released in a eucalyptus forest, far from the freeway.
