Hundreds of migrants blocked a highway near Huehuetan on Monday in the state of Chiapas, to demand buses where they could be transferred to other states to process the legal documentation to legalise their situation in the country.
Migrants were seen laying down on the road to stop the traffic, and some of them tried to get into vans and other vehicles.
“We are reaching agreements to be able to bring buses, if there are blockades, there are no buses, so it is important that they clear the blockade”, explained a migration office worker to those migrants blocking the road.
In recent days, two caravans that left Chiapas were dismantled after reaching an agreement with the country’s immigration institute. The agency stressed that in order to avoid the massive concentration of migrants, they have been transferred to other states where they will be issued humanitarian visas. Women, minors, the elderly, and people with disabilities will have priority in this process.

SOT, Migration officer (Spanish): “We are reaching agreements to be able to bring buses, if there are blockades there are no buses, so it is important that they clear the blockade, and at each point their issues and problems will be resolved as we get buses. It is a huge amount, you asked for 50, but more will go there.”
SOT, Maxim, Haitian migrant (Spanish): “We have spent five to six hours, if they want to make a decision, we have to rest, here is the problem. Not them, here the problem is that they have us here from five to six months and we have nothing. We do not have jobs or work, and we have to pay for the house every month, we have to eat, but they do not release [work] permits.”
