Thousands of migrants from Central America marched from the town of Alvaro Obrego to Huehuetan in the so-called ‘Mother Caravan’ with the aim of reaching Mexico City on Sunday.
They gathered in the large group to avoid being dispersed and arrested by Mexico’s migration authorities.
Participants managed to march for 11 km without being stopped and entered Huehuetan to rest and decide whether to continue moving on Monday.

SOT, Eduardo Angel Polanco, Migrant from Honduras (Spanish): “We are going in a caravan because the migration authorities are not respecting this document. This document is a legal document that authorises us to freely pass through all of Mexico from the southern border to the north, but the migration authorities are taking us out of the units and tearing up the documents and we are returning to jail, the jail city that is Tapachula.”

SOT, Blanca Estela Ramos, Migrant from Guatemala (Spanish): “I do not want to live in Guatemala. I need to be with my children. I have been looking at it for 10 years and with my mother who has cancer. She left 16 years ago and the mother is in the United States and my desire is to go there that they give us shelter. I don’t want to live there. I just want a visa to go because I do need it.”
